Primera terminal sire lambing season
In our first lambing season this year, we sourced Primera terminal sire from Innovis to produce high performance lambs. We select this particular composite breed for our lambing season due to the fast growth rate off grass and the ease of lambing this breed outside.
After putting them to the tup back in November, our expecting sheep were scanned to assess the number of lambs we were expecting as Spring approached in February. We scanned for singles, twins and triplets and grouped them accordingly in order to determine how many lambs each sheep was carrying and how they would need to be managed.
Two weeks prior to lambing, each group was moved into the parkland in Buckminster in preparation for the lambing to begin on 1st April. Despite the horrendous weather at the time, the exceptional mothering ability of the sheep shone through as they took cover from the rain and snow to give birth under the parkland trees. Another hurdle to overcome was the lack of grass growth to feed the sheep, especially for the ewes that are now producing milk to feed their lambs. Luckily, at the 11th hour the weather vastly improved, allowing the grass to take off.
As the lambing is nearly finished now, with just a few late sheep left to give birth, the ewes and lambs are enjoying the warmer weather. The newest additions to the flock can be seen skipping across the parkland in the sunshine.
